Fredericton, New Brunswick – 6 June 2016 - The Maritime College of Forest Technology (MCFT) is pleased to announce that it will be offering a two year Utility Arborist Program, set to begin in February 2017. “Utility arboriculture is a natural fit with MCFT’s existing training programs in forest technology and advanced fish and wildlife technology. We are very excited to be opening our doors to 25 new students in February of next year,” says Gerry Redmond, MCFT Executive Director. The College has been working closely with the utility arboriculture industry in New Brunswick to develop a program that will address employment opportunities and needs in this field of vegetation management.

The format of the program will include four months of classroom and controlled work environment training, followed by 7 to 8 months paid work practicum with on-the-job training. The Utility Arborist Program will be the only one of its kind in Atlantic Canada. The technical training in this program will be provided by experienced instructors from MCFT, NB Power, and Arboriculture Canada. MCFT is cooperating with the New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour to designate this field of work as a certified trade.

MCFT has campuses in both Fredericton and Bathurst, NB. It has been a leader in forest technology education in the Maritimes for 70 years. For more information on the Utility Arborist Program, including details on how to apply, prospective students and employers can visit
